What are Cows Made of?
1% Waste in This
Case!
Yesterday the 26th of August, the year 7 students of the junior secondary at Tambo State School researched how much of a beef carcass is wasted, how much of a beast is used for by-products and what percentage is used for meat. Firstly, we researched how much of a beast is actually wasted, as we needed to clarify that it was definitely only 1%, which turned out to be correct. We learnt that approximately 55% of a beef carcass if used for meat and approximately 53-70 % is used for by-products, as the percentage can vary depending on the carcass and the different industries/people you talk to. An interesting fact I discovered about the by-product insulin is that 26 pancreases from cattle provide enough insulin to keep one diabetic person alive for one year! It is very interesting to know that 99% of one beast is used! Although, most of the junior secondary students at Tambo live on properties, we all still have a lot to learn. However, getting the opportunity to enter in the Archibull prize competition has allowed us to learn many of the aspects and roles that contribute to the Agricultural industry and some very interesting facts about the cattle themselves!
