Our Betsy is Full of Gifts
I couldn’t believe all the amazing products that can be made just from one beef cow. In fact only 1% of the whole cow is not used. So basically, the whole cow is used. Some really interesting by-products can be made, other than just our usual beef meat. Products such as sport equipment, clothing, saddles, rugs, handbags, stubby coolers, chairs, whips, and loads more, all from just the hide. But some really interesting products, which are made out of some of the wildest things are soap from the cow’s fat, and sugar from their bones! Who would of thought that what we have to sweeten up our day, is what we usually feed to the dogs. Steele Howard, Year 9 |

I learnt that 99% of a beef gets used. Products include dog food and other things. I learnt that the bones in the cows can be used for sweetener. I learnt that gelatine, soap, leather and paint brush bristles are made from different parts of cows. Gelatine is found in the joints of the cow and it is used for setting desserts. Soap is made by the cows fat which allows us to wash ourselves. Leather is made from the hide which lets us build many products such as boots and wallets. Paint brush bristles are made from the tail hair of a beast which allows us to be able to paint. I found it interesting that the bone on a cow is used in some sugars to help sweeten them. I learnt this week that 99% of the cow gets used when the cows are killed, and that we use the by-products from a cow every day. The by-products that I can remember that come from a cow are paintbrushes, leather, gelatine, soap, and some refined sugar. The paintbrush bristles are made from the hair of the cow’s tail and the gelatine is made from the joints of the cow near the tissue. Soap is made from the fat of a cow; leather is made from the cow hide. Sugar is made from the bones of the cow. The thing I found most interesting on this topic is that there are lot of things that you can get from a cow, it’s not just beef, but also by-products made from a cow we use for everyday life like sports equipment and paintbrushes for art and many more things. This week I learnt that there are a lot of beef-by-products that are used in everyday life and 99% of the cow gets used to make these products. We read together a website that contained all of these by products that are made from cows including soap, leather, paintbrush bristles, sport equipment, insulin and a lot more. Soap is made from beef fat, leather is made from the cow hide, paintbrush bristles are made from the cow hair, and sports equipment is made from the cow hide. Even insulin can be made from livestock! I thought the most interesting part about this week was learning that 99% of beef gets used. Patrick Graham, Year 8 |
