Brooke Bailey, Year 9
In the last few days we have started painting the background on Betsy. It looks great! The year seven students have painted a sunset kind of colour on the left side of her body. This is where the by-products will be presented. Last week a group of people painted the ocean style background on her front right leg and her face. This represents the Great Barrier Reef which is protected when farmers fence off the water ways.

Today Betsy the cow was primed by year 9 to 10‘s so she is ready to be painted when the designs are voted from the year 7 to 10’s. I am so excited to paint Betsy! Also today we saw all the different designs that the high school students have done and they look great! Most of the designs had some by-products that we have learnt about during the term made from different parts of cow. Some of the designs had some things that we learnt about during the term regarding how to save the water ways that run into the oceans. On my design I had the sun to show it make the vegetation grow, a fence to stop the cows from dirtying the water, clean water that runs into the ocean, green grass near the water and the mountains to show there are hardworking farmers in the country. I included gelatine to show it is from a cow, a paint brush made from the hairs of the cow’s tail, scales to show that we care for the protection of the Great Barrier Reef and the sea creatures that lives there, balls to show that they are made of leather from a cow's hide and a brand to say that Betsy belongs to the Tambo State School and she came here in 2015. Jorjah Walker, year 9 Today we put a primer on Betsy to keep her nice and clean so the paint goes on easier. We also sent a letter to all the properties that we visited in our local area and thanked them for their time and effort.

We created questions to ask the property owners or managers about their property for this week. I am looking forward to tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday because we get to go and see other properties and the way they work. We are travelling to places that are organic, look for genetics and use hormones and antibiotics.
Patrick, Connor and Brooke Tomorrow we are going on our first field trip to a property called ‘Uanda’ it is an organic property. Wednesday we are going to our second field trip to ‘Tambo Station’ to learn about hormones and antibiotics in cattle. The Yr 8, 9 & 10 students have just finished reading the blog about Danille Fox, one of our young farming champions, who grew up on a property. She grew up on the property called Bona Vista, 75km north of St George. Danille was inspired by her parents and other family members. She has 5 older siblings, 4 sisters and 1 brother. Danille participated in other Agricultural programs to enhance her knowledge and experiences such as Taste (The Agricultural Skills and Tertiary Experience) and Feast (Future Experiences in Agriculture, Science and Technology). (Tazma Skennerton, Year 10) In 2011 Danille began studying a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. She then changed to a different degree which was Bachelor of Veterinary Vcience. (Lilly Richardson, Year 8) Year 7 students enjoyed applying their learning to Kool & The Gang's song Celebration. In another edition we had the all of the secondary students involved. Moooo it’s a Celebration Three weeks ago, Lilly (Year 8) and Paige (Year 10) both stood up on parade and told the school, how Betsy, the great white… cow, was here because we were competing in the 2015 Archibull competition. The whole of Tambo State School (Prep-Year 10), teachers, parents and visitors were thrilled to meet and have a photo taken. We crowded around her trying to get as many students as we could into the photo. Betsy is here for the junior secondary students to research the beef industry and then to take what we learn to decorate her for the Archibull Prize Competition.
Year 7 Class “Beef cattle provide so much more than food -
celebrating the animal that surrounds us.” We are very excited to have our industry. It is going to be fun now that we know our industry, as we have many beefy ideas to create on our Archibull cow. By Ellie Hobbs, Year 7 |
